Pig iron is a coarse iron produced directly in a blast furnace, which can be further refined into steel, wrought iron or industrial pure iron, or remelted and cast into a special shape. Pig iron is an iron-carbon alloy with a carbon content of more than 2% , the carbon content of industrial pig iron is generally between 2.11% -4.3% , and contains C, Si, Mn, s, P and other elements. According to the different forms of carbon in pig iron, it can be divided into steelmaking pig iron, cast pig iron and nodular cast iron. Pig iron properties for hard, wear-resistant, casting good, but the pig iron brittle, can not be forging.
The carbon in steel-making pig iron exists mainly in the form of iron carbide, whose section is white, usually called white iron. This pig iron is hard and brittle and is commonly used as a raw material for making steel. The carbon in cast pig iron exists in the form of flake graphite, and its fracture is gray, usually called gray iron.
